Depression and the Effects on the Mind
People feel sad sometimes especially after disappointments or a quarrels with someone. This does not mean that the person is depressed. Depression is more that the normal sadness, and is a strong mood that involves hopelessness, despair, sadness and discouragement that goes for a long time. Your normal activities will be affected if you are depressed.
It can be genetic or caused by other factors such life events, medical conditions that affect people’s moods, and family and social environment. Life events are such as tragic accidents that paralyze a loved one causing grief beyond normal levels, the death of a loved one or even the death of a pet. Depression affects the mind making you feel helpless and hopeless. It makes one feel unlovable and worthless even if the person’s true value is not worthless. It causes negative thinking in a person because of the constant sadness that one feels.
If your friend or family member shows symptoms of sadness most of the time, low concentration, tiredness all the time, weight gain or loss, withdrawal from friends and family and feeling of worthlessness, know that the person is depressed and should seek treatment.
